(NL)Weinig hedendaagse denkers zijn zo invloedrijk als Judith Butler, politiek filosoof en bijzonder hoogleraar aan de Universiteit van Californië, Berkeley. Met Gender Trouble, de bekendste van hun meer dan 25 publicaties, liet Butler in 1990 een onuitwisbare indruk na op het feminisme en de queer theory. In hun meest recente boek, Who’s Afraid of Gender (2024), ontmaskert Butler de angst van extreemrechtse leiders voor gender als een afleidingsmanoeuvre van hun ware agenda.
DE SINGEL geeft je nu de uitzonderlijke kans om deze toonaangevende stem live aan het woord te horen. In het kader van het seizoensthema Longing to Belong duikt Butler in de centrale gedachte van hun meest ‘emotionele’ boek, Precarious Life (2004). Butler schreef dit boek na 9/11, ‘als reactie op de omstandigheden van verhoogde kwetsbaarheid en agressie die volgden op deze gebeurtenissen’. Centraal klinkt de vraag hoe rouw en geweld kunnen inspireren tot solidariteit en wereldwijde rechtvaardigheid, in plaats van tot een eeuwigdurende oorlog. Zelden was dat werk zo actueel als nu. Tijdens deze niet te missen avond gaat Butler in gesprek met Sarah Bracke, hoogleraar ‘Sociology of Gender and Sexuality’ aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Samen vragen ze zich af hoe we elkaar terugvinden in een verdeelde wereld die verdeelde individuen creëert.

In their most recent book, Who’s Afraid of Gender (2024), Butler exposes far-right leaders’ fear of gender as a diversionary tactic from their true agenda.
DE SINGEL now offers you the unique opportunity to hear this influential voice live. As part of the seasonal theme Longing to Belong, Butler delves into the central idea of their most ‘emotional’ book, Precarious Life (2004). Butler wrote this book after 9/11, ‘in response to the conditions of heightened vulnerability and aggression that followed from those events.’ At the heart of the discussion lies the question of how grief and violence can inspire solidarity and global justice, rather than perpetuating an endless war.
