Welcome back, Gatlinburg! We are excited to continue with our successful “Our Story” series, where Appalachian stories are told and preserved. Our next guest this September is Wiley Oakley storyteller Lew Bolton! We are giving you a heads up to mark your calendars and be ready to learn about the legendary storyteller, Wiley Oakley. The event is FREE, and you can go to the library’s website, annaporterpl.org, to RSVP to get email reminders.
Who is Wiley Oakley? He was a wise mountain man who was born and raised here in the Smoky Mountains and gave his life to preserving Smoky Mountain heritage. Wiley had many titles to his name, including father, husband, writer, naturalist, businessman, philosopher, entertainer, activist, and First Smokies Guide. He was also known to own the Wiley Shop, where he performed with friends and family to entertain locals and guests. His passion for the Smokies was passed on to his family and continues to this day.
Want to learn more? Stop by the library and read countless books on Wiley Oakley and his family, and also by the legendary man himself! You can also go on Facebook and join the Wiley Oakley - Roamin’ Man of the Mountains page. Lew Bolton is the administrator and welcomes everyone to “feel free to add photos, make comments, [and] add information about the Oakley Family.”
The event will take place at Anna Porter Public Library.
The library is located off Highway 321 next to the Gatlinburg Community Center at 159 Mills Park Road.
