🍂✨ October Half Term at The Little Art Den ✨🍂
Week 1: Pop Culture & Folklore
📅 Monday 13th – Friday 17th October
📍 76 High Street, Kirkcudbright
This October, The Little Art Den opens its doors for a week of strange towns, stitched spells, glowing ghosties, and folklore creatures brought to life. Each session is designed to spark imagination and give children the chance to try out exciting, hands-on art techniques — with no pressure for “perfect” results, just the freedom to create.
Monday – World Inspired by Tim Burton
🖤 Morning (10–12:30): Self Portraits & Ghostly Ghouls
We’ll be looking at Burton’s quirky, gothic style and creating self-portraits in soft pastel on toned paper. Think elongated shapes, big eyes, and shadowy expressions — a playful way for children to reimagine themselves as a character in a Burton-esque world.
👻 Afternoon (1:30–4): Polymer Clay Ghosties
Children will use polymer clay to sculpt small “ghostie” figures — designed to glow when placed over a tealight-style candle. These clay lanterns will be full of character: spooky, silly, or somewhere in between.
Tuesday – Wicked: For Good
🪡 Morning (10–12:30): Embroidery & Beading Inspired by Wicked
We’ll take inspiration from the emerald green, pink, and black palette of Wicked and stitch a small embroidery piece on fabric. Children will learn simple stitches and add sparkling beads to create designs full of theatre and magic — from abstract patterns to tiny symbols or even favourite lyrics.
✨ Afternoon (1:30–4): Create Your Own Wand
This session dives into resin and wire work to create one-of-a-kind wands. Children will design their own magical focus, incorporating ribbon, gems, or spirals of colour. Each wand will be unique — whether delicate, dramatic, or bursting with personality.
Wednesday – No Sessions
A midweek pause for everyone to recharge.
Thursday – British Folklore Artworks
🐾 Morning (10–12:30): Zentangle Folklore Creature
Using the meditative zentangle style, children will explore shape and pattern to bring folklore beings to life — selkies, witches, sprites, or creatures of their own invention. Black fineliner pens will build intricate patterns against bright backgrounds, combining focus with imagination.
🎨 Afternoon (1:30–4): Linoprint Folklore-Inspired Piece
Children will design and carve their own small lino block with a folklore-inspired creature or motif. They’ll learn safe cutting techniques, then roll ink and make multiple prints — discovering how printmaking can bring bold, graphic designs to life.
Friday – Wild Woodland Stories
🌳 Full day (10–3, with 1-hour lunch break): Modroc Folklore Creature
A big day for big creations! Children will design, build, and decorate their own folklore creature sculpture using modroc plaster bandages. From tall, eerie guardians to quirky woodland companions, this is a chance to go large-scale and let imagination take over. Weather permitting, we’ll head to the nearby park for lunch and a stretch mid-day (no roads to cross).
