About the class (and me):
You’ll explore Brazilian dances rooted in African, Indigenous, and European traditions—a cultural fusion that’s rhythmically rich and deeply expressive. In Brazil, they say “quando você dança, você lava sua alma" when you dance, you wash your soul—and it’s true. Expect to wake up your hips, your spine, your spirit. During the class, you will learn moves and articulate your body in new ways. You will not only learn steps, that grow into routines but begin to embody a more "latin" way of moving. Some dance experience is a bonus but not required.
I’m Sarah, and Brazilian dance has been part of my life for nearly 30 years. Living on Salt Spring, I definitely miss the energy of carnival culture, the rhythms of Latin life, and my incredible teachers—but I’m committed to keeping the flame alive.
We’ve got to keep our hips moving and stay connected to our sensual, rhythmic selves—no matter where we are.
I teach with a warm, upbeat style, bringing cultural context and history of the music and dances we learn. Come join us!
Class structure:
Week 1-3: Learn Afoxé and Samba de Roda basics with a focus on rhythm, hips, and joyful expression.
Week 4-6: Step into power and presence with Maracatu, get playful with Coco. Blend all four styles with a routine that celebrates the ocean. Celebrate with final routine, freestyle circle, and full-body carnival joy.
