CELT and the All Ireland Permaculture Network are delighted to once again work alongside The Slieve Aughty Centre and the local coordinating team to host this year's All Ireland Permaculture Gathering on August 23rd - 24th 2025 in Co. Galway.
This annual gathering of permaculture practitioners, self organises to share 'Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share' skills and knowledge offering workshops on sustainable land use, compost heating, seed saving, community organising and covers many aspects from how to build your own house and Co-housing, to no-dig forest gardening, growing mealworms at home and identity, sexuality and community to name but a few topics.
Aims: Strengthen the permaculture network across Ireland.
The vision is to advance the knowledge and practice of permaculture on the island of Ireland through sharing, networking and advocacy.
We are really excited and looking forward to cohosting the Gathering again and welcome you to our first Pre - Gathering Meitheal and Hands On Workshop on Building Compost Toilets on Sat.. AUGUST 9th.. from 11am - 4pm
Please come along and join us as we Start to create the Community Camp for this years Festival.. Bígí Linn!!
and register your interest on our website - celtnet.org
This Hands On Workshop will give you :
-Understanding of the benefits, health and hygiene related to compost toilets
-Design options for constructing outdoor compost toilets
-Knowledge of practicalities with using a compost toilet
The course will entail hands on making of compost loos on site at the Slieve Aughty Centre, so please dress appropriately for outdoor activities. The Workshop is suitable for anyone wishing to join us for our upcoming permaculture gathering and anyone wishing to build their own compost loo in their back garden, school or project site.
This one day Meitheal gives us the opportunity to share our sustainable living and permaculture skills and knowledge, and learn the basic steps and the nuts and bolts of how to design, build and manage our own back garden outdoor composting toilet, which are waste-free toilets that rely on the biological process of composting to recycle toilet material, and produce humanure.
PLEASE NOTE FOR WORKSHOP - PLEASE BRING TOOLS! HAMMERS, NAILS, SAWS, or ANYTHING ELSE YOU THINK MIGHT BE REQUIRED on the day!
Compost toilets can simply consist of a five-gallon bucket covered by a hinged box. Toilet instructions are simple. From this point, composting human waste (humanure) is safe and easy. However, there are a variety of ways to make a humanure toilet, over the day we aim to explore this together and build 2 outdoor structures for our community compost toilets. The humanure process involves a compost toilet, a compost bin and cover material.
By exploring the steps together on how to make, use, and manage compost toilets, we will show how easy it is for everyone to set up a compost loo in their home, garden, allotment, forest school sites or community areas.
Recycling our humanure, food and other organic waste into compost provides a range of environmental benefits, including improving soil health, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, recycling nutrients, reducing water wastage and thereby mitigating the impact of droughts.
Although most of the world's humanure is currently quickly flushed down a drain, or discarded into the environment as a pollutant, as permaculturists, we know it instead as a rich natural resource that can be converted, through composting, into lush vegetative growth, and used to feed humanity.
Everyone is welcome to come along and to help us to build our camp, gather energy and ideas and co create resources and materials needed for our upcoming All Island Gathering!
