Growing up on a mountainside in Wicklow, Róisín Curé sold her first paintings at the age of 14. Her education included art in NCAD, a design HND in London and an MSc in Geology in Galway. Raising children and fielding endless rejections resulted in very little professional success for about twenty years. Thirteen years ago, while living in Mauritius, Róisín discovered urban sketching. She established Urban Sketchers Galway in 2014 along with two co-founders, which is going from strength to strength these days. She taught her first international urban sketching workshop in 2015 and in the ten years since she has taught across Europe and worked as a professional on-location sketcher for various government bodies.
Róisín Curé has represented Ireland on the world stage at USk Porto (2018), USk Amsterdam (2019), USk Switzerland in Bern (2021), and will carry the flag this year in Poznan, Poland and Geneva, Switzerland. Between 2019 and 2021 Róisín published three bestsellers with sketching as their theme: An Urban Sketcher's Galway (Currach Press 2019), reprinted as Galway In Sketches And Stories (Red Stripe Press, 2024); The Urban Sketcher’s Handbook: Drawing Expressive People (Quarto, 2020) and Dublin In Sketches And Stories (Merrion Press, 2021 and 2024).
All are in second edition and / or translation. Róisín started teaching sketching live online to her followers early in 2020. From 2022 to 2024 she hosted the Sketch Therapist podcast. She started broadcasting on YouTube in 2023 making videos about life as a sketcher. In 2023, frustrated by the shortcomings of sketching bags available, she started designing a bag for sketchers, and in 2024 her cactus leather SketchPocket hit the market, selling out in a few weeks. The Róisín Curé Sketch Club is in full swing, with subscription-only live classes twice weekly broadcast to a global community. She lives in Kilcolgan in south Galway.
