The Path To Jazz With Dandy Wellington | JUNETEENTH 2025

Join bandleader Dandy Wellington for a discussion on slavery’s impact on spiritual music, how many of those songs found their way into the jazz canon, and the origins of spiritual music in a secular setting. Virtual tickets are available for guests who want to view the livestream but are not members. A link with instructions on viewing will be sent before the event.

This presentation, both in-person and live-streamed, is available free of charge for all Galveston Historical Foundation members as part of their #GalvestonHistory+ account. Access will start at 11:15 a.m. on the day of the presentation. Tickets are non-refundable to this event.

ABOUT DANDY WELLINGTON | Dandy Wellington is a bandleader, entertainer, event producer, and creative consultant, born-and-raised in Harlem, New York. Influenced by the style and skill of classic entertainers of the past but with his feet planted in the present, it’s no surprise that he has made a name for himself across the globe. From producing stylish events all over New York to performances in St. Petersburg, London, and Sydney, Dandy solidifies himself as not only an impeccably dressed man-about-town, but a bonafide man-of-the-world. Mr. Wellington epitomizes the undeniable cool of the Jazz Age, while also bringing a progressive perspective befitting of the ever-changing landscape of our modern lifestyle. ABOUT JUNETEENTH | General Orders, No. 3, was issued on June 19, 1865. The orders, among others read by General Gordon Granger at sites throughout the city, announced to the people of Texas that all enslaved people were free. This day, now known as Juneteenth, Freedom Day, or Emancipation Day, is one of Galveston Island's most important historical moments and has been marked by remembrance and celebrations almost every year since.
