Finding the City of Refuge: Archaeology and Archives to Study Brother XII's 1920s Conspiritual Cult

In 1927, a small group of people from England arrived in Nanaimo under the leadership of a man who referred to himself as Brother XII. Calling themselves the Aquarian Foundation, by 1932 the group owned several properties in the Gulf Islands where they claimed to be building the City of Refuge, an exclusive location where this select group of people would be protected from the turmoil of the world as it spiritually transitioned into the Age of Aquarius. At the same time, the Aquarian Foundation claimed that, under the guidance of spiritual beings known as the Ascended Masters, they were also to awaken the world to the truth that a shadowy cabal was secretly forming a total world dictatorship that nobody would be safe from. In this presentation Steph will share how she combines the written materials from Brother XII and the Aquarian Foundation, such as books, pamphlets, and letters, with archaeological research to examine how the Aquarian Foundation built their landscapes to both reflect and reinforce their ideologies. She will share some of the work done so far, where she intends to go next with it, and how you, as residents of Galiano Island, may be able to help.
