This process is not exactly egg painting. It is a wax resistant dying process called Pysanky and is steeped in legend, folklore and symbolism from Ukraine. It uses raw eggs which, if there is not even the tiniest hairline of a crack in the egg, will dry out, solidify, and last forever. There are Pysanky in the Smithsonian that are over 100 years old.
During the lesson, we will use a tool called a kitska, a cake of beeswax, a lit candle, and permanent dyes. Students will be provided with a kit that includes a medium point kitska, wax, and three packets of dyes (to use later at home).
The instructor will provide additional tools to play with, several jars of around a dozen different colors of dyes, paper towels, candles, example patterns, printouts of possible symbolism, and eggs.
Students can expect to complete between one and four eggs depending on their abilities and the degree of intricate detail of the designs they choose.
Registration is for one week only and ends March 15th!
