Michael Martin Murphey has spent over 50 years blazing a trail across pop, country, western, and bluegrass music. Best known for iconic hits like “Wildfire,” “Carolina In The Pines,” and “What’s Forever For,” Murphey has released 35 albums and earned multiple gold records, chart-topping singles, and Grammy nominations.
A proud Texan and a pioneer of the “Cosmic Cowboy” movement, Murphey helped shape the Austin music scene of the ‘70s and played a key role in the rise of “Outlaw Country.” His songs have been recorded by legends like Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, and Johnny Cash.
In the ’80s and ’90s, he championed the culture of the American West through his symphonic concerts and Cowboy Songs albums—sparking a cowboy music revival and launching the Warner Western label. He also founded the celebrated “Westfest” festival to showcase Western heritage and music.
Murphey’s work in western and bluegrass genres has earned him a long list of honors, including the Charlie Russell Award, five Wrangler Awards, and a spot in the Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Fame. His 2018 album Austinology paid tribute to his Austin roots with appearances from Willie Nelson, Steve Earle, and more.
In 2019, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Western Heritage Awards. Through it all, Murphey continues to celebrate the land, spirit, and stories of the American West.
