Imagine a serene morning in Gainesville where the sun filters through the sprawling branches of an ancient live oak tree. The air is fresh, filled with the soft rustle of leaves and the distant chirping of birds. This is the setting for our Community Sit, on the Thomas Center lawn, at 9 am on the last Saturday of each month. It is a gathering where tranquility and connection with our inner and outer nature converge. It’s a serene scene. As you step out of your car, approach by foot or on a bike, you will likely hear the sounds of soothing music that will invite you to settle in to your seat.
Meditation is more than a practice; it's a journey inward. Guided by a leader of one of the many Buddhist sanghas or temples in the area, we sit together under the oak tree. We get a taste of the
different traditions approach to meditation. We are guided briefly through the first of two 20 minute sittings, with a 10 minute walking -under -the- oak session in between. The native live oak, a symbol of strength and resilience, with its roots deeply embedded in the earth, reminds us to ground ourselves and find balance. We find stillness amidst the hustle of daily life.
Nature has an unparalleled ability to soothe the soul. As we sit and walk under the great live oak, we may recognize that we are all a part of nature, sharing breaths that we take in and give back. The resurrection fern-covered branches, like gentle arms, embrace us in a shelter of safety and peace.
This connection with nature not only may enhance our meditation experience but may also foster a deeper appreciation for our unity with all of nature and the countless inhabitants of mother earth.
We invite you to bring your seat and join our community. Whether you're a seasoned meditator or a curious beginner, the oak tree welcomes you. The Gainesville Buddhist Alliance group welcomes you.
Come, sit, and discover the peace that lies within and around you.
