From the forest to the Ph*rm*cy, the bush to the medicine bottle, explore how plants and traditional practices from the Caribbean have traveled around the world to help heal people of all cultures.
Join us for an evening book talk and workshop with Trinidadian American author, Aleya Fraser. Her recent book Caribbean Herbalism: Traditional Knowledge and Modern Herbal Healing offers practical tools for building relationships with plants and making common Caribbean herbal remedies like bush teas, bush baths, herbal wines, infused alcohols and oils, and more!
In the Caribbean, medicinal and practical use of plants began with its first inhabitants, the Amerindians. New plants and knowledge were introduced through both triangular trade with Asia, Africa, and Europe and the enslavement of Africans and Indians from Southeast Asia, culminating in the modern-day system of Caribbean herbalism.
In this workshop you will get to hear excerpts from the books, see and feel the Caribbean plants growing at the Green Farmacy Garden, and taste some traditional bush teas.
Books, plants, and Caribbean plant tinctures will be available for sale by the author.
Aleya Fraser is a land steward, seed keeper and ethnobotany enthusiast who lives in Trinidad and Tobago and grew up in Maryland. She holds a B.S in Physiology and Neurobiology and uses her research and biological science background, as well as her direct experiences and conversations with elders, to build her knowledge of the plants around her.
