About the event

Politics in the Pub: "Local Matters - What's Going On"
Politics in the Pub is back! This month we have something special. After the state and federal elections, it’s time to get back to local matters. If you want to know what’s going on in Freo, what’s occupying its people, and how you can get involved, this one is for you.

We have four very different speakers, where the night takes us is wide open. Whether you’re a Freo local or curious about the seaside city, this will be an inspiring night to warm your winter.

Featuring:

- Skye Atherton and bringing the CAT bus back to Freo. You may have read about this South Freo teenager in the Fremantle Herald or Freo Massive. Her mission to get the CAT bus back is picking up steam. She will be discussing why we need the CAT back, what she’s doing about it, and how you can help.

- Paul Loring on how to transition from acquaintances to friends in an age of rising loneliness. Have you noticed that is getting harder to make friends? A long time Politics in the Pub regular, Paul is spearheading the effort to address this sticky issue, which is spreading across postcodes and age groups. If you’re at all curious about initiatives intended to help people connect, Paul is worth your time. If you’re an extrovert, bring your favourite introvert.

- Emma Livesy on why local precinct groups are well worth your time. Do you know the suburb of Hilton? It’s home to what many consider the finest jacarandas, mulberries, and (according to the 2025 Active Citizenship award) precinct group in Fremantle. From verge planting weekends to arranging Halloween and Easter events that attract families from miles beyond the postcode, the Hilton precinct group is an example of flourishing involvement. As the convenor of the group, Emma will be sharing her reflections on how it got so good and how this could apply to your own communities.

- Adam Bennett on the current political landscape in Freo. We are living in historic times. Both state and federally, Fremantle is no longer a safe seat. It’s a big deal. Adam has been paying close attention and has had skin in the game. He’s coming to Politics in the Pub to sharing his observations and call for us to take stock. The political landscape changes before our eyes – so what are we seeing, exactly?

The MC for the evening will be Fremantle Network organiser, Christian Mauri.

Please know that if you arrive late to a room at capacity, we can’t let you in. Arrive ahead of time to get a good seat and rub elbows. Stay behind afterwards to discuss the evening with new friends old and new.
