You are invited into the workspace to experience raw performing arts in process. This WORKSHARING marks the culmination of a two-weeks residency, where the artists Marthe Koning and Gerben Vaillant have explored the dance of attraction and repulsion.
THE ARTISTIC RESEARCH
In this residency, Marthe Koning collaborates with Gerben Vaillant. Together, they explore the ambiguity of the human desire to co-exist, depicted in an endless series of failed duets. A dance of attraction and repulsion. In an intimate but fragile living room, two people spin on their own axis, floating like the dust that hangs in the air and has not yet descended after an all-changing conflict. That indeterminate moment is their starting point. In the investigation they are fascinated with what one lacks and the other possesses, and the deep human emotions that flow from this place of friction: desire, jealousy, and the struggle for freedom. The greed to fully absorb what the other has to offer alternates with the fear of losing oneself.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
The collaboration between Marthe and Gerben stems from a shared fascination with each other’s work. Marthe’s voice is at core of her practice; a pure, direct and fearless source of communication that exposes the tension between emotion and intellect, often giving her work a ritualistic quality. Gerben creates atmospheric worlds with cinematic power, blending dark poetry that keeps audiences on edge. His work spans language, dance, imagery, philosophy and trash. Together, Marthe and Gerben explore what emerges when they follow their twisted fascinations.
