You are invited into the workspace to experience raw performing arts in process. This WORKSHARING marks the culmination of a 2-weeks residency, during which dancer Alvilda Faber Striim in close collaboration with artists Elisha Mercelina, Sissel Johanna Bakken and Þórunn Guðmundsdóttir unfold their research on storytelling, the imaginary, and the state of distraction as a choreographic motor for reorganization.
THE ARTISTIC RESEARCH
Drawing on Claire Bishop’s Disordered Attention, the project seeks to dismantle the binary between distraction and attention and instead cultivate distraction as a different type of attention, and thereby fostering a critical alternative to capitalist notions of focus and productivity.
Distraction will be investigated as a physical and relational dance practice, proposing a sensorial and affective type of attentiveness.
The decorative and the practical cross in the interaction with objects, bodies, memories, and fiction. Oscillating between dramatic action-character outbursts and moments of stillness, the project ponders the demands of late-stage capitalism, constantly pulling the body in multiple directions and dispersing attention.
At the WORKSHARING you will meet the artists in the work space and get an insight into the material they are working with, take part in a conversation about the work at this exploratory stage and thereby contribute the artists further process.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Coming from different backgrounds in dance, music, theater, pedagogy, and performing arts, as well as different generations, this gathering of artists creates a rich foundation for exchanging new knowledge and strategies within the topic of distraction. Through each artist’s own way of moving and performing ever-shifting landscapes, allowing affection to unfold, the project aims to develop a language and collective rhythm in dance compositions, navigating emotional and sensorial layers.
The project will be facilitated by Alvilda Faber Striim in close collaboration with artists: Elisha Mercelina, Sissel Johanna Bakken and Þórunn Guðmundsdóttir.
