Please join the Harpers Ferry Civil War Round Table in Frederick, Maryland for a guided tour of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine,
at 1:30 pm, Sunday, December 14.
Follow in the footsteps of soldiers and surgeons to discover the harsh conditions, personal sacrifices, and innovations of Civil War medicine, innovations that continue to save lives today. Dr. Gordon E. Dammann, D.D.S., and his wife, Karen, began collecting medical artifacts from the Civil War in 1971. Their hobby soon developed into a passion, and with the help of friends and colleagues, their dream of a museum became a reality in 1990. The museum is appropriately located in Frederick, which became “one vast hospital” during the Civil War, when wounded soldiers were sent to the city from nearby battlefields to receive treatment and recuperate.
Our guide, Dana Shoaf, is the museum’s Director of Interpretation. Prior to joining the museum in November 2023, he served as the editor of Civil War Times magazine. He has spent his life pursuing his historical passions, beginning his career at Time-Life, Inc., as a writer and researcher on the Voices of the Civil War series.
Our tour is open to HFCWRT members and to the public. In addition to the organization’s contribution, we are asking participants to contribute at least $5/person to the cost. We ask that you reserve your space by contacting
