About the event

FREE "To K*ll A Mockingbird" Showing - Garden Classic Movies:
Join us every month for a free classic film! July's movie: To K*ll A Mockingbird.

We're so excited to be partnering with The Garden Theater to showcase a classic film, To K*ll A Mockingbird (1962, PG)!

We can't wait to see you on Thursday, July 31, at 6pm--bring your friends!

--------------

We've been doing our Monthly Movie Club for more than a year now, and it's been so popular, that we've decided to add to what we're offering...

Yes, we will still be playing "nostalgic" movie throwbacks once a month--mostly movies from the 1980s, '90s, and early 2000s. Those events will still encourage you to dress up in a costume to match the movie's theme, and we will still have wonderful treats provided by Kilwins. And yes, even though those movies are free, we're going to be taking donations that fit a local cause on theme with that night's movie.

However, we are now going to be offering a more laid-back GARDEN CLASSIC MOVIE CLUB once a month, as well! (No dressing up necessary, no treats, no fundraising.)

These will be movies that are older--think 1930s through 1970s.
Our first was in December, when we had 85 show up for "It's A Wonderful Life"; then in January, we had 95 show up to "Dr. Zhivago"; then in February, we had 40 for "The Third Man"; March was "The Sting"; we had 65 in April for "National Velvet"; we had 65 in May for "The Philadelphia Story;" we had 80 in June for "The Graduate."

December 2024: It's A Wonderful Life - 85 people showed up
January 2025: Dr. Zhivago - 95 people
February 2025: The Third Man - 40 people
March 2025: The Sting -
April 2025: National Velvet - 65 people
May 2025: The Philadelphia Story - 65 people
June 2025: The Graduate - 80 people

Now on July 31, we're showing "To K*ll A Mockingbird"--please join us!

-------------

To K*ll a Mockingbird is a 1962 American coming-of-age legal drama/crime film, directed by Robert Mulligan and starring Gregory Peck, Mary Badham, Phillip Alford, John Megna, Frank Overton, James Anderson, Brock Peters, Robert Duvall, William Windom, and Alice Ghostley. Adapted by Horton Foote from Harper Lee's 1960 Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, the film follows a lawyer (Peck) in Depression-era Alabama defending a black man, (Peters) who has been charged with rape, while educating his children (Badham and Alford) against prejudice.

The film gained overwhelmingly positive reception from both the critics and the public; a box-office success, it earned more than six times its budget. The film won three Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Peck and Best Adapted Screenplay for Foote, and was nominated for eight, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress for Badham.

In 1995, the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

In 2003, the American Film Institute named Atticus Finch the greatest movie hero of the 20th century. In 2007, the film ranked 25th overall on the AFI's 10th anniversary list of the greatest American movies of all time. In 2008, the film ranked first on the AFI's list of the 10 greatest courtroom dramas. In 2020, the British Film Institute included it in their list of the 50 films you should see by the age of 15. The film was restored and released on Blu-ray and DVD in 2012, as part of the 100th anniversary of Universal Pictures.

It is considered to be one of the greatest movies ever made.
