We’re excited to share that Dr. Carol Meirelles, coordinator of the Alliance for Manatees, will be giving a keynote lecture at the Brazilian National Conference on Research and Conservation of Aquatic Mammals (ECOPEMAQ) @ix_encopemaq , taking place in Fortaleza, Brazil (June 17–20, 2025). The conference is organized by Aquasis, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Sistemática, Uso e Conservação da Biodiversidade (PPGSIS/UFC) , and Programa de Pós-Graduação em Engenharia de Pesca (PPGEP/UFC), bringing together leading voices in aquatic mammal research and conservation.
The talk, titled “From Backyard to the World: Community-Based Conservation and International Alliances for the Protection of the American Manatee,” will reflect on Carol’s 26-year journey in manatee conservation—from early grassroots work with the NGO Aquasis to leading an international initiative that connects researchers and knowledge holders from Colombia to Brazil - the Alliance for Manatees.
During the event, the Alliance will also host a working meeting with 10 Brazilian experts to discuss recent progress and outline the next steps in our collaborative conservation efforts.
