Eric Johanson blends sharp songwriting with a deep connection to the guitar, creating music that’s dynamic, soulful, and rooted in rock, blues, and modern influences. His playing is expressive—riff-driven and rhythmic one moment, fluid and melodic the next—always serving the song over flashiness.
There’s a rawness to his sound, but also purpose. Whether channeling the swampy pulse of New Orleans or diving into fuzz-laden textures, Johanson strikes a balance between grit and finesse. As American Songwriter puts it, he “displays his guitar prowess… within melodies and lyrics that push the boundaries of blues/rock.”
His latest album, The Deep and the Dirty (2023), debuted at #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart and confirmed him as one of today’s most compelling guitar-driven artists. In 2024 alone, he’s toured over 100 cities in 10 countries. Guitar Player named him one of the 25 Best New Blues Guitarists, and Total Guitar placed him among the 100 Greatest Blues Guitarists of All Time.
Born and raised in Louisiana, Johanson cut his teeth in local clubs and underground bands, blending the heaviness of rock with bluesy depth. After time abroad, he returned to New Orleans and quickly became a sought-after guitarist, merging Southern roots with modern edge.
His breakout came when blues legend Tab Benoit signed him to Whiskey Bayou Records and produced his debut, Burn It Down (2017). Johanson toured with Benoit for two years, then caught the attention of Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars), who produced his 2020 follow-up, Below Sea Level—a darker, more introspective album.
For The Deep and the Dirty, Johanson teamed up with producer Jesse Dayton to deliver his most powerful work yet. The album fuses raw guitar with gripping songwriting, respecting tradition while pushing forward. He’s toured with Samantha Fish, Kingfish, Walter Trout, and more, gaining a reputation for intense, soul-driven live shows.
With a growing global following, Eric Johanson continues to carve his own lane—redefining the space between rock, blues, and everything in between.
