Discover the expressive possibilities of Reduction Lino Block Printmaking in this immersive two-day workshop led by local printmaker Liz Ortiz of Mad Hare Press. Held at the inspiring Wolverine Farm Publick House, this hands-on class is ideal for artists looking to advance their printmaking skills or explore layered color printing for the first time.

Over the course of two sessions, participants will learn to:

• Design and plan a multi-stage image for reduction printing
• Carve successive layers from a single lino block
• Mix and apply inks for clean, vibrant prints
• Register paper for precise multi-color alignment | create registration template.
• Use a tabletop printing press or hand tools for consistent results

This technique is both challenging and rewarding, as each layer carved removes part of the image—meaning you only get one shot! By the end of the workshop, you'll take home your carved block and a small edition of multi-color prints.

**THIS IS A TWO DAY WORKSHOP and it is important to be present for both days.

Lino Block Reduction is a multi-layered printmaking technique where a single block is carved, printed, and then carved again to create each color layer. As you work through the process, the block is gradually reduced, resulting in a beautifully layered print. In this workshop, I’ll guide you through each step, from carving to inking, allowing you to create a vibrant, multi-colored print by the end of the session.

Workshop Highlights:

• No experience necessary. All levels are welcome.
• Participants will receive all necessary tools and materials.
• You will leave the workshop with a completed Lino block print.

What to Bring:

• Bring a 4x6" drawing that you would like to carve & print.
• Image/drawing should have 2-4 colors (including your outline color).
• Image should be print ready to ensure you have enough time to print.
• We will be printing a max of 4 layers.

• Liability Waiver & Photo Release Form: By attending this workshop, you agree to our Liability Waiver and Photo Release Form.
• Minimum Age Requirement: Suggested minimum age is 14 years. Sharp cutting tools will be used during this workshop; it is recommended there be a confident level of hand coordination to prevent injury.
• Parent/Guardian Attendance: Minors 14-17 years must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Parent(s)/guardian(s) must sign liability waiver(s) for any minor and must be present for the entirety of the workshop.
• Allergen Warning: Please be aware that some materials used in this workshop may cause possible skin irritation or potential allergic reactions. Gloves and masks will be available.

FIRST DAY | BEGIN TRANSFERRING: Transfer Design to block

Info: Re-draw image on tracing paper and begin transferring it to your prepped block.

FIRST DAY | BEGIN CARVING: Begin Carving DESIRED WHITE PARTS

Info: Begin Carving the areas on your design that you wish to stay white/color of the paper.

FIRST DAY | BEGIN REGISTRATION: Create a registration template for printing

Info: Learn how to create a registration template that works for your image orientation. This registration tool will be used for both days.

FIRST DAY | BEGIN PRINTING: Begin Printing your first Color

Info: Once you have your registration tool, learn how to print your first color. This is usually your lightest color

FIRST DAY | PLAN & CARVE SECOND COLOR: Carve away what you want to stay

Info: Once you have printed the first color you can begin planning your second color. Start carving away what areas you want to stay your first color.

FIRST DAY | PRINT SECOND COLOR: Start Printing your second Color

Info: Start printing your second color using your registration template and print over your first color.

🕑: 12:00 PM - 12:30 PM
FIRST DAY | CLEAN UP: After finishing your 2nd color begin clean up.

Info: After finishing your second color we will begin clean up to and store our prints, blocks and registration templates for the next day.

SECOND DAY | BEGIN THIRD COLOR PREP: Begin planning for your third color

Info: Review your block and current state of your design. Begin planning for your third color. Next step is to carve parts of your design that you want to stay your second color.

SECOND DAY | BEGIN PRINTING THIRD COLOR: Print your third color

Info: Begin printing your third color over your prints. Evaluate the color change and pivot if necessary.

SECOND DAY | BEGIN FINAL COLOR PREP: Begin Planning for your final color

Info: Decide your final color, usually a dark color (blue, black, brown, green). Start carving away everything but your design skeleton. This last step should keep only your line work, your outline.

Info: Begin printing your final color using your registration template.
