Nature Section outing - Glamis Sand Pit LNCS

Joint outing with Dundee Naturalists Society.

This site is one of the newly designated Local Nature Conservation Sites (LNCS) in Angus and has both botanical and invertebrate interest. The floor of the sand pit is home to a range of mining bees. A wide range of other plants is present on the sandy soil and many birds nest in the more overgrown corners of the site.

At the end of May, the ground was very dry, with many plants suffering from drought. It will be interesting to see if the recent rain has revived the plants by the time we visit. However, the Small Blue butterfly flight season was exceptionally early this year, here and elsewhere locally, so we will be unlikely to see them.
