Chicago Southland Green Committee to Host First Repair Café September 13!
What do you do with a broken toaster, a bike that needs fixing, or a sweater with holes? Toss it? No way!
The Southland Green Committee, made up of members from the Village of Flossmoor, Village of Homewood, Village of Park Forest, Richton Park Library, Flossmoor Library, School District 161, Homewood Public Library, and the Homewood Flossmoor Park District, is hosting the community’s first Repair Café on Saturday, September 13, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at Flossmoor Village Hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road.
At the Repair Café, volunteer experts will be available to help repair household items, including small appliances, clothing, and toys. Tools and materials will be provided, and all repairs are free.
“Repair Café is about more than fixing broken items. It is about building community and changing the way we think about waste,” said Carrie Malfeo, Sustainability Coordinator for the Village of Park Forest. “So many things we throw away could easily have a second life with a simple repair. By coming together to share skills and resources, we not only save money and reduce waste, but also strengthen connections between neighbors.”
The goal of the Repair Café is to reduce waste, save resources, and bring neighbors together. Visitors will discover that repairing items is not only practical and sustainable but also fun.
Everyone is welcome to stop by, bring an item in need of repair, or simply learn more about this new community effort.
