‘RD’ is a multimedia project by artists Sandra Binion and Lou Mallozzi. The exhibit is inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1844 short story Rappaccini’s Daughter. Hawthorne tells the story of Beatrice the daughter of a mad scientist Giacomo Rapaccini cultivating a garden of exotic and poisonous plants. From caring for the garden Beatrice becomes poisonous if touched finding herself akin to Persephone and Hades with her father Giacomo. She and a young student Giovanni fall into a tragic-romance where she eventually turns Giovanni poisonous as well. The story deals with the tensions of desire and order the male anxiety towards the female body and fear of unchecked scientific experimentation. In the exhibition ‘RD’ interprets this story to become a living site for these themes through writing images gestures sound surfaces etc. 

‘RD’ seeks to explore one's relationship with the nature of a garden; the man-made and natural duality inherent within the space. What is the fact and fiction that emerges with the garden? How does one approach the garden through their individual path senses and interpretations? The artists approach the gardens' materiality structure and history through their informed senses and minds and to create works that emerge from their experiences.

Sandra Binion is an interdisciplinary artist whose work often takes the form of multimedia installations based on literary or historical themes and references. Her work encompasses performances installations process-based artworks photographs and paintings that embrace a choreography of the everyday. She has exhibited and performed in the US Europe and Japan at venues including the Musée d’Orsay Paris Kyoto City University of the Arts Maison de George Sand Musée Flaubert Rouen Hyde Park Art Center Chicago Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art Kunstraum Stuttgart Institut Unzeit Berlin and many others.

Lou Mallozzi is an interdisciplinary artist and educator in Chicago. He dismantles and reconstitutes gesture sound image and language to poetically destabilize our relationships with the familiar through performances installations interventions fixed media works improvised music drawings and collaborations. His work has been exhibited and performed in many venues in the US and Europe including the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago The Smart Museum at the University of Chicago The Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago and the Italian Pavilion of the Venice Biennale TUBE Audio Art Series in Munich Radiorevolten Festival in Halle Constellation in Chicago and many others.

RD è un progetto multimediale che prende come spunto il racconto Rappaccini’s Daughter di Nathaniel Hawthorne del 1844. La storia si svolge in un giardino in cui si rispecchia la visione razionalista del mondo mentre all’interno vengono coltivate piante tossiche invasori e predatori in maniera incontrollata. La storia di Hawthorne intreccia ansie paure e dilemmi riguardanti il corpo umano il controllo razionale sulla natura indisciplinata e le conseguenze morali della sperimentazione scientifica.

RD indaga questi temi attraverso un impegno diretto con i luoghi reali e immaginari legati al racconto e alla sua scrittura trasfigurando materiali superfici immagini storie e gesti attraverso video disegno scultura fotografia pittura e suono.

"RD" si propone di esplorare il rapporto dell'individuo con la natura di un giardino; la dualità artificiale e naturale insita nello spazio. Qual è la realtà e la finzione che emerge dal giardino? Come ci si avvicina al giardino attraverso il proprio percorso i propri sensi e le proprie interpretazioni? Gli artisti si avvicinano alla materialità alla struttura e alla storia dei giardini attraverso i propri sensi e la propria mente per creare opere che emergono dalle proprie esperienze.

Sandra Binion è un'artista interdisciplinare il cui lavoro spesso assume la forma di installazioni multimediali basate su temi e riferimenti letterari o storici. Il suo lavoro comprende performance installazioni opere d'arte processuali fotografie e dipinti che abbracciano una coreografia del quotidiano. Ha esposto e si è esibita negli Stati Uniti in Europa e in Giappone in luoghi come il Musée d'Orsay di Parigi la Kyoto City University of the Arts la Maison de George Sand il Musée Flaubert di Rouen l'Hyde Park Art Center di Chicago il Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions il Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art il Kunstraum di Stoccarda l'Institut Unzeit di Berlino e molti altri.

Lou Mallozzi è un artista e docente interdisciplinare di Chicago. Smantella e ricostituisce gesti suoni immagini e linguaggio per destabilizzare poeticamente il nostro rapporto con il familiare attraverso performance installazioni interventi opere con supporti fissi musica improvvisata disegni e collaborazioni. Le sue opere sono state esposte e rappresentate in numerose sedi negli Stati Uniti e in Europa tra cui il Museum of Contemporary Art di Chicago lo Smart Museum dell'Università di Chicago l'Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Chicago e il Padiglione Italiano della Biennale di Venezia la TUBE Audio Art Series di Monaco di Baviera il Radiorevolten Festival di Halle Constellation di Chicago e molti altri.
