new group show: One Small Acre!
Exhibition Statement
I am the tiller of one small acre
I am the lucky soul caretaker
Of this piece of time
One simple plot, but it's mine.
(chorus by Redgirl)
One Small Acre explores a return to intimacy. Our gaze is on the land with its unique recipe of dirt and entwined roots. It acquiesces to slow time, the kind that shifts with the seasons and makes room for germination and incubation, the kind of time that requires waiting and watching. Our scope widens to see its creatures and the acknowledgement that we are one of many. We recognize that we have neighbours we have yet to meet.
In this show, we explore the tension of our global citizenship while navigating the particularities of Place. Here, we are invited to engage deeply as we face the beautiful and nurturing, but also the inevitable turns of events, betrayals, and the death of dreams. This is the space that calls us to the Long View. We are shaped by our "acre" and we are its shapers; we attempt to grapple with our history while holding hope for the future.
Each of us navigates these spaces differently. In these explorations we embrace what we treasure and mourn what has been lost, whether they be dirt and land, family and community, political freedoms or creative choices.
