The Ringwald Theatre is proud to introduce From the Fringe, a bold new program dedicated to presenting small-batch productions of original, thought-provoking plays by up-and-coming artists. Kicking off the series is the world premiere of A Certain Kind of Light, a searing new work written by Detroit playwright Joey Urreta and directed by Asia Hicks.
Set during a weekend bender in a college town, A Certain Kind of Light explores a group of young adults whose carefree revelry masks deeper personal struggles. As substances flow and facades slip, they are forced to confront hard truths about themselves, each other, and the demons they have tried to keep in the dark. The play builds toward a surreal and emotionally charged climax—where reality bends and raw honesty breaks through.
A Certain Kind of Light will run August 22–31, 2025, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays, at 7:00 PM, and Sundays at 3:00 PM. Please note there will be NO Monday performances. All performances will be held at The Ringwald Theatre, located inside Affirmations Community Center at 290 W. 9 Mile Road in downtown Ferndale, Michigan.
The cast features Jayshona Boxx, Linda Rabin Hammell, Camden Maccagnone, Hosanna Phillips, Siri Quist, Daniel Santillana, Rashna Sarwar, and Joey Urreta. The production is directed by Asia Hicks and features a set and sound design by Asia Hicks with lighting by Brandy Joe Plambeck. The production is stage managed by Kat Sturges.
Tickets are $30 for Friday through Sunday performances and are available now at www.TheRingwald.com. Please note that The Ringwald is now a cashless venue; credit cards will be accepted at the door.
From the Fringe aims to spotlight the boundary-pushing voices of emerging playwrights, offering them space to experiment, challenge, and connect. This program represents The Ringwald’s continued commitment to innovative, inclusive storytelling that reflects the complexity of our world.
