The Right-of-Way to Restoration: Effective Vegetation Management for Native Roadside Plantings

Join Rachel Woody-Pumford, a PhD student at the University of Arkansas, as she shares her research on managing native roadside plantings.

This program offers a unique opportunity to learn about innovative strategies for combating the decline of North American grasslands and prairies. Rachel's research focuses on Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management (IRVM), exploring how tools like mowing, herbicides, grazing, burning, and replanting can cultivate desirable vegetation along roadsides.

Specifically, she'll delve into the potential of postemergence (POST) herbicides to control invasive species and create space for newly established native grasses and forbs. While these herbicides are registered for use in certain areas, their effectiveness in establishing native plantings remains largely unknown. Rachel's work addresses this critical gap, presenting findings from a greenhouse screen and field trial that investigated the safety and utility of four POST herbicides on 24 native Arkansas plant species (6 grass and 18 forb species).
