BMG Sept Meeting (Program - Exploring Cueva Palomora: 27 days underground)

We are meeting this month on the UA campus, in Gearhart 017. The program will be by Matt Covington on the 2025 Cheve Expedition, which worked in Cueva Palomora. The program will start at 7 pm, followed by a regular meeting of the BMG.

Exploring Cueva Palomora: 27 days underground in one of the world's deepest cave systems

The Cheve Cave System of southern Mexico is one of the deepest known cave systems in the world. Exploration within the main cave system is currently at an impasse. In spring of 2025, in an attempt to find the continuation of Cheve, a small team of cavers worked to explore Cueva Palomora, which is located beyond the current Cheve terminus. The core team of 4 cavers, including Riannon Colton and Matt Covington of the University of Arkansas, camped underground for 27 continuous days while digging and exploring an arduous series of tight wet crawlways at the bottom of the cave. Near the end of the expedition, the team broke into a large river passage with an unknown origin. This passage led to a sump, and no bypass was found in the limited remaining time. Many leads remain.
