Celebrate the holiday season with a lively and insightful exploration of one of the world’s most beloved traditions—the Christmas tree. In this engaging program, renowned interpreter Dennis Picard traces the fascinating journey of the Christmas tree from its early European origins to its gradual appearance in New England households during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Picard reveals how evergreen symbolism—representing continuity, renewal, and hope amid winter’s darkness—shaped early celebrations and influenced the tree’s cultural significance. Through rich storytelling, humor, and vivid historical detail, he examines how immigrant communities brought their traditions to America, and how print culture, illustrations, and consumer advertising helped transform the Christmas tree into a cherished seasonal centerpiece.
This warm and reflective presentation offers a meaningful start to the holidays and provides rich context for understanding how a once-foreign custom became an essential part of American celebration. It pairs beautifully with the museum’s Candlelight Tours later in the afternoon.
