Join archaeologist Sally Pointer, author of ‘The Artifice of Beauty, a history and practical guide to perfumes and cosmetics’ and a regular consultant on historical cosmetics for media (including BBC ‘Jane Austin, Having a Ball’ 2013, and ‘Make-up, a Glamourous History’ 2021) to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth with a special exploration of Regency cosmetics, perfumes and hygiene.
After a comprehensive introduction to the history of cosmetics from the earliest evidence onwards, we will use accurately reconstructed 18th and 19th century cosmetics to create a full Georgian and a Regency look, then set to work to make our own cosmetics and soaps to take home.
Participants will use cosmetically safe ingredients to create a personalised palette of Regency recipes including pomade, face powder, two types of rouge, lip paint, eyebrow tint, washballs, aromatic vinegar and even pearl powder using real pearls. You will also receive a booklet covering the recipe sources used in the class with notes on appropriate modern ingredients.
This is a rare opportunity to work directly with a cosmetic historian and places are likely to sell fast!
