Becky Schmitz - A Celebration of Life

Rebecca Jane Schmitz passed peacefully April 14, 2025 in Fairfield, IA. She was born October 10, 1949 in Charles City, IA, daughter of Thomas Herbert and Blanche Morrell.

Becky graduated from High School in 1967, received a BA in Social Work at the University of Kansas and earned a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Washington. Becky met Ronald David Schmitz at the University of Kansas and married in 1972. They celebrated 53 years of marriage in December 2024.

Becky and Ron shared golf, hiking in nature, and development of spiritual consciousness. Both are Sufi students of Master Effendi in Turkey. In High School, Becky was runner up in golf in the state of Iowa. She was a school Social Worker, an Iowa State Senator from 2002-2008, and then became Iowa Jefferson County Supervisor until 2012. She continued her social service as a therapist, helping many people until her passing.

Becky and Ron have two wonderful children, Curtis Lee Schmitz and Cassandra Jane Koomjian. Curtis married Stephonie Ogden, and together have two children, Marley and Ava. Cassie married Jonathan Koomjian and together have two children, Nairo and Myra. All are surviving Becky’s passing as well as her sister, Judy Lumb, brother, Dennis Morrell, sister-in-law Beverly (Jim) Pyle, brothers-in-law Leo (Ngan) Schmitz and Larry Schmitz, and nieces and nephews. Preceding her death were her parents Thomas and Blanche Morrell.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Lincoln Center - 401 West Stone Ave, Fairfield, IA on Sunday May 4th, 2025 from 1-5PM.
