Talk Title: From Opposition to Co-creation: Engaging with Gynaecologists on Gynaecological Violence

Abstract: Gynaecological care constitutes the first point of contact for gynaecological, sexual, and reproductive health in many countries. Women, as well as non-binary, trans, and intersex persons using these services, are exposed throughout their lives to the risk of gynaecological violence—a phenomenon with potentially profound short- and long-term consequences for mental, physical, social, and sexual health. Yet, the very notion of gynaecological violence remains contested in healthcare settings, where providers often struggle with the idea that care providers themselves can convey or facilitate violence. Building dialogue between researchers and practitioners, and developing shared understandings of how to identify and name such experiences, can be a powerful step toward more respectful gynaecological care. In this talk, I will discuss current debates in research on gynaecological violence and present insights from an ongoing project in Germany that engages gynaecologists directly in this conversation. Our goal is to move from opposition to co-creation: working together to foster awareness, improve communication, and prevent gender-based violence in care. This approach is concurrent and indissociable to collecting the experiences and perceptions of those who are exposed to violence.

Bio: Céline Miani is Professor of Social and Gender Epidemiology at the School of Public Health, Bielefeld University, Germany. She is also an affiliated researcher with Unit 14, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, at the National Institute for Demographic Studies (Ined), France. Her research explores how gender norms and relations shape reproductive health and healthcare, with a particular focus on family planning, childbirth, and abortion. She is currently leading an ERC-funded project on violence in gynaecological care.

Before joining Bielefeld University, she spent six years in the United Kingdom conducting health services and policy research at the University of Cambridge and RAND Europe. She holds a PhD in Public Health from Bielefeld University and studied at the École Normale Supérieure and the Paris School of Economics in France.
