TOURNEY DAY
Friday 1st August – From 12-noon to 5pm
Crown Meadow, Evesham
FREE ENTRY
In the thirteenth century, men would gather from far and near, to take part in games of armed combat. The tourney.
This could be a proving ground where those who showed themselves worthy could be selected by Barons or even the King to become part of their personal retinue – a position of great wealth and privilege.
Barons, Knights and noble warriors would use the Tourney to settle old scores, meet old friends and make new ones – a lot of food and drink would be consumed, along with music, dance and drunken debauchery.
FLAG TOURNEY
A town would be selected to host the Tourney and Barons would set up camp with the Knights – there could be thousands of men camped around the town in their own households – each with colourful banners and flags denoting who was who…
These banners and flags would be a prized target for an opposing retinue to steal, so skirmishes within camps would be common as flags were stolen and ransomed back. You needed the flags to parade before the kings so were very valuable.
We show this with the Flag Tourney.
WHO WILL BE CHAMPION?
This is a last man standing competition to be crowned Evesham Tourney Champion. The greatest honour a man at arms could receive and be knighted by the King as his reward.
HORSE TOURNEY
A stunning display of mounted cavalry, with various cavalry combat games from a selection of our 25 horse-masters. The Horse Tourney in later centuries became the Joust we are more familiar with – this is where it all started.
FALCONRY
To complete the Tourney Day, we have the King’s favourite Falcons in a display of taloned talent, speed and aerial majesty.
