"When Mistakes Happen: Clarity, Communication & Emotion in Dog Training"
Join us for an in-depth, practical workshop that explores what really happens when mistakes occur in training—and how they often reflect gaps in our communication, not failures on the dog's part. Building on the core principles of the ABC model (Antecedent, Behaviour, Consequence), this session will unpack how subtle human cues shape the ‘picture’ dogs respond to, and how misunderstanding these signals can lead to confusion and misplaced frustration.
We’ll look at how to create clarity and consistency through smarter use of reward markers—specifically reward-specific markers and reward-location markers—and explore how these serve not only as markers but also as cues for what happens next. You’ll learn how to fine-tune your marker system to improve emotional regulation, increase motivation, and reduce errors in training.
We’ll also explore how emotions play into learning, and how the Predatory Motor Sequence can be integrated effectively into reward strategies and play, especially for high-drive working dogs. This workshop builds on material shared at a recent national CPD event for police dog handlers (with representatives from 15 UK forces), but will go deeper into application and theory for all trainers.
Ideal for trainers, handlers, and behaviour professionals who want to raise the standard of their work through clearer communication and better understanding of the dogs they train.
