Mardi Gras always falls on Shrove Tuesday, which is the day before the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday.
Mardi Gras is a festive day celebrated on Shrove Tuesday (the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday), which marks the close of the pre-Lenten season. The French name Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday, from the custom of using all the fats in the home before Lent in preparation for fasting and abstinence.
While Mardi Gras celebrations are only for one day, that is, March 4 this year, the Mardi Gras season, also known as Carnival, starts on January 6 on King’s Day and ends on the midnight before Ash Wednesday on March 5.
The best place to celebrate Mardi Gras is New Orleans, where there are parades of floats and performances.
