The "Carnivale di Venezia," or Venice Carnival , known for its spectacular masquerade parties, offers a luxurious twist on the Carnival custom. Costumed participants flock to St. Mark's Square with swishing dresses, ornamented wigs, gentlemen's cloaks, and handcrafted Venetian masks that are sold all around the city. Public parades and costumed pub crawls at Venice's bacari, or wine bars, are open to everyone, but evening balls and Venetian music shows with dinner and dancing come with royal dress codes and corresponding price tags.
