About this Event

On October 17th, the Eureka Theater and Food for Thought are teaming up for a fundraiser featuring a double feature of locally produced short films by the filmmakers that produced “Great White Encounter: The Scott Stephens Story” and “High Water Mark: Stories from the ‘64 Flood.” This will be the public premiere of both short films and occurs during National Wildlife Refuge Week.

Doors will open at 7 PM with the premieres beginning at 7:30 PM. The filmmakers, subjects of the documentaries, as well as, representatives from the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge will be on hand to chat with the public. Photographs by David Thomson will also be displayed in the theater lobby and a slide show of his work will be shown during the event.

Albacore Tuna: The Tale of a Fish (36 min)

From family fishing operations to sport and commercial fishing, this Food for Thought production explores the past and present of the albacore tuna fishery along the Pacific Northwest, including albacore tuna biology and fish processing. Tickets will be $10, with all proceeds going to the Eureka Theater.

Seeking Refuge (23 min)

This film celebrates the photography of David Thomson at the Humboldt National Wildlife Refuge, and his relationship with the refuge. From stunning images of landscapes and water-scapes to the intimate and sometimes comical lives of the local wildlife, David has captured the very essence of this Humboldt County gem.

The filmmakers-

Jennifer Bell is a local filmmaker and media producer. Constantly intrigued by the stories that everyone carries within them, she strives to bring them out in a way that they can be appreciated, respected, and enjoyed by the wider community.

For over 10 years she was the co-producer of Food for Thought, a radio show that celebrated locally produced food and local food culture.

Ted Okell is a sculptor, filmmaker and sound artist. He has taught various workshops at colleges and art centers, including the University of Oregon and the College of the Redwoods. He began making documentary films after completing a digital media degree in video production.

Jessica Eden is a multi-media producer and wildlife biologist. She produces content that explores the confluence of people in place, celebrating eco-cultural connections and resilience.

Food for Thought is a DreamMaker project funded by the Ink People Center for Arts and Culture.

All door proceeds are being generously donated to the Eureka theater to help us continue our mission of being a community gather space for film, music, art, and culture.
