The Eureka Symphony opens the season with Contrast & Transformation, October 3rd and 4th at 7:30 PM at the Arkley Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Eureka.
Be transformed by music spanning continents and centuries, featuring music by Alexander Borodin and Paul Hindemith, along with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major with piano soloist John Chernoff.
Our opening concert “Contrast & Transformation” highlights the contrast of music from three countries–Russia, Germany and the United States–each one transformative in a unique way. Alexander Borodin’s Overture to Prince Igor transforms a 12th-century epic poem into a grand Slavic opera. Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major transforms the classical concertos of Haydn and Mozart into a model for Romantic concertos to come. And Paul Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber turns Weber’s graceful compositions into a masterwork of 20th-century orchestral color and power.
Pianist John Chernoff has performed across the United States, including appearances at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, and Symphony Space in New York City. He has worked with a variety of renowned artists, including Libby Larsen, Chen Yi, Amit Peled, Ian Swensen, and Mark Sokol. He holds degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, and has served as a performer, accompanist and coach at the Heifetz International Music Institute, Humboldt Chamber Music Workshop, and Sequoia Chamber Music Workshop. He is a frequent soloist with the Eureka Symphony, co-hosts the Symphony’s popular Musical Notes program prior to every concert, and regularly appears in the Temporary Resonance Trio with concertmaster Terrie Baune and cellist/conductor Carol Jacobson.
