This classroom-based course will focus on outdoor photography - including landscape, wildlife, and macro photography - and will be suitable for complete beginners, and for more seasoned hobbyists who would like to learn more.
The 3-part course will focus on technical as well as creative skills, so you can get the best out of your camera, get the images you want, and to move from “taking” an image to “making” an image.
Carsten Krieger is a County Clare- based landscape and nature photographer with more than 25 years' experience. He has published 20 books on Ireland’s landscape, heritage, and nature, and has worked for clients like Tourism Ireland and the Burren & Cliffs of Moher Geopark.

Each session will last around 1.5 hours
Session 1 - the technical stuff:
- Know your camera - exploring participants’ cameras layout & functions.
- What do you really need - considerations when buying a camera, lenses, and other equipment.
- Understand basic camera settings to adjust exposure and colour, and learn how to use them.
- JPEG vs RAW: Getting the image right in-camera vs. adjustments in post production.
- Q&A throughout the session.
Session 2 - the creative stuff:
- Planning the image: The journey from idea to image.
- Making the image vs. taking the image: Composition, light, and using camera settings creatively.
- Telling the story: Considerations to take it beyond the snapshot.
- Ethical considerations for wildlife photography.
- Q&A throughout the session.
Session 3 - the computer stuff and summary of the course:
- Processing images from RAW files: Using Lightroom, Photoshop and alternatives.
- Additional processing options: other software and plug-ins.
- Sharing images: online, in print, as a book.
- Image reviews: Bring your best images for critique (you can also critique Carsten’s images).
- Q&A throughout the session.
