What looks like an ordinary suburban household soon reveals itself to be anything but in Next to Normal, the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning rock musical that dares to dive deep into the lives behind the white picket fence.
At the center is Diana, portrayed by Jennifer Crawford, a mother battling bipolar disorder while trying to maintain some sense of normalcy. Her husband Dan, played by Stephen Kane, is doing everything he can to keep the family afloat—even as cracks begin to show. Their son Gabe, brought vividly to life by Josh Wahl, seems to haunt their every moment, while daughter Natalie, portrayed by Tess Klenchik, struggles to be seen in the chaos. Along the way, Natalie finds solace in a budding romance with Henry, played by Rich Aton. And guiding—or misguiding—the family through treatment is Dr. Fine and Dr. Madden, both portrayed by Mark Durkee.
Directed by Rob Egan with music direction by Rich Choe, this raw and electrifying production invites you into the minds and hearts of a family on the edge—grappling with grief, love, and what it means to live fully in the face of mental illness.
With a powerful rock score by Tom Kitt and a deeply human book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, Next to Normal is not just a musical—it’s an experience you won’t soon forget.
