Within just a few miles of Ely, approximately 31 species of wild orchids can be found, and Ken knows where to find them. This field trip is open to students who have taken Ken's class previously, as well as others who have a good understanding of their camera and want to join in the fun.
Bring a camera (DSLR preferred), the manual, all lenses, tripod, and a bagged lunch. Students are also welcome using a simpler camera or smartphone or if your interest is identification more than photography, as long as you understand the pace will be set that allows everyone to take photographs with correct settings, positioning, etc. Some students may be carpooling, and you're also welcome to drive your own car. The route will cover approximately 50 miles. Carpooling and/or caravaning will be arranged at 8 when students meet in the Ely Folk School parking lot, between the EFS building and the Saint Anthony's Church.
Every season is a bit different, due to weather, but during the chosen weekend (in various years), Ken has photographed stemless ladyslippers, ramshead ladyslippers, large yellow ladyslippers, showy ladyslippers, hooker’s orchid, early coralroot, spotted coralroot, arethusa (dragon’s mouth), northern green orchid, large round-leaved orchid, and small purple-fringed orchid.
About the Instructor: Ken Hupila grew up and lived in Northern Minnesota for most of his life. He moved to the Ely area in 1978 and has been a resident here since. Ken is an educator, having taught in the Ely School System for 33 years. He is an outdoor adventurer who has canoed, camped, hunted and fished from Alaska to Minnesota, including a 500-mile, 27-day paddle on the Albany River to Hudson Bay in 2006. He has been a wilderness guide for over 40 years in the BWCA and Superior National Forest. He became a professional photographer in 2001, specializing the past five years in outdoor photography. Recently he entered the writing world as an outdoor author covering topics such as his guiding experiences, his trip to Hudson Bay as well as personal wilderness trips that he has taken into the backcountry. Ken has taught photography classes through Community Education and the Ely Folk School for the past several years.
