Chip carving is a very old craft practiced by many cultures. This is an art form that almost anyone can practice. It just requires patience and a steady hand. Chip carving generally consists of a set of triangular cuts layed-out in regular, geometric patterns, but can be more free form. You will learn to lay out a pattern for cutting, how to make the various cuts and as you develop a feel for the wood, you will learn how to deal with mistakes. You will leave with some new skills and, hopefully, a carved coaster.
The material fee covers a chip carving knife and a range of other tools to use during the class such as compasses, rulers, pencils, etc. If you would like to bring your own chip carving tool, please contact The Ely Folk School to register at 218-235-0138 or by sending an email to
aW5mbyB8IGVseWZvbGtzY2hvb2wgISBvcmc=. Bart will also supply two slabs of basswood for your project. One is for learning and practice and the other is for the "final" project. Bart has other slabs of basswood and white pine for sale at prices of $3 or $4, depending on the size.
About the Instructor: Bart Dunning has done various woodworking activities for decades. He has built some furniture, and done some 3D carving as well as relief carving. Bart has taught chip carving at Marine Mills Folk School, teaches at the Bloomington Woodcraft store and teaches and demonstrates chip carving at the Dakota City Heritage Village at the Dakota County fairgrounds.
