Please join us for a one day workshop to learn about getting started in aquaculture and aquaponics
About this Event
This one day workshop is intended for novices who are interested in aquaculture and/or aquaponics. The workshop investigates the requirements needed to initiate and operate an aquaculture or aquaponics farm in Ontario.

Workshop Structure:
We are happy to announce that we will be offering this workshop as a hybrid event. Information is presented in a lecture format followed by a tour of the research facilities at the Ontario Aquaculture Research Centre.
- For In-Person Participants: The workshop fee includes all lectures, a tour of the Research Centre coffee breaks and lunch.
- For Online Participants: The workshop fee includes all online lectures and you will be provided with a link to a virtual facility tour on YouTube.
Facilities Tour:
In-person participants will tour a large-scale research farm raising rainbow trout, Arctic charr and lake whitefish. From water supply to waste management systems, you'll get a chance to view many of the bits and pieces discussed during the lecture sessions.

Attendance is by pre-registration only, registrations will not be accepted at the door. In instances of very low pre-registration, the workshop may be re-scheduled to a later date. Registrants will be contacted should a re-scheduling occur.

Workshop Facilitators:
Mike McQuire
- Michael McQuire is an aquaculture and aquaponics specialist working for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness. He has studied aquaculture at Vancouver Island University and gained work experience in British Columbia’s salmon farming industry and in the Yukon farming Arctic char. Michael has also worked in enhancement aquaculture across Ontario and with Fleming college’s aquaculture co-op program.
Dr. Alexandra Reid
- Before attending the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, Alex earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Biology at the University of British Columbia. She then completed a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Comparative Pathology (specializing in fish) at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph. Alex now works as a veterinarian for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness.
Dr. Marcia Chiasson
- Earning both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree in Biology at the University of New Brunswick, Marcia then completed a Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Guelph where she trained in genetics and breeding. She worked in the private sector at the Center for Aquaculture Technologies and in the public sector at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness before returning to the University of Guelph to manage the Ontario Aquaculture Research Centre.
