We often think of fiction as a way to escape reality, and some write it off as purely a waste of time.
But while these things may apply to SOME fictional works, there are authors who salt their fiction with admirable wisdom for daily life. JRR Tolkein is one such author.
In this message, Rev. Tony Burton will explore some of the wisdom given to us by Tolkein in his writings, and look at how that wisdom is appropriate for today.
This message is tied to the following legacy UU Principles:
#4 - A free and responsible search for truth and meaning.
#6 - The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all.

REV. DR. ANTHONY (TONY) BURTON was born in 1956, and grew up in the Church of God. He comes from a long history of family ministers.
His upbringing was pretty insular, but while spending 12 years in the US Navy, 18 months in the National Guard, and a number of years in a variety of technical and teaching professions his horizons expanded. He attended other types of religious services, met believers of other faiths, encountered other cultures, and became friends with people whose sexual identities varied from those he had known.
Over time, he became disenchanted with his own religious path and became a spiritual seeker. He found that Druidry resonated with him and is an initiated Druid through the Druid Order of Three Realms at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Gwinnett. He was initiated into shamanism and became certified as a Reiki Master/Teacher in three different styles.
Tony is certified as a Meditation Teacher, has two bachelors degrees, a masters, and a PhD.
He is ordained by the Progressive Christian Alliance, by the Open Door-Open Faith Unitarian Church, and as an Interfaith Chaplain by the Esoteric Interfaith Church and believes the idea that "Many paths may lead up the mountain, but they all reach the peak."
Tony is married to Lara. They have lived in Duluth, MN, and other locations, while Lara was a travel nurse. They now live in Ranger, GA.
