The LPSH is not a fundraiser, it’s a consciousness raiser! Ruthmere invites a member of the community to read an age-appropriate children’s book to children and their families. But this is a story hour with a specific purpose. These stories are reflections of each reader’s distinct background, and communicate the values of diversity, unity and liberty.
Every child receives a Lincoln Penny souvenir in a keepsake jacket as a reminder of why this experience is important.
This LPSH Event Sponsor is Centier Bank.
ABOUT KATIE:
Katie Campbell grew up in the South Bend area and is thrilled to once again call it home. They attended the University of Notre Dame and received a Bachelor of Arts in English, with a minor in Gender Studies and a concentration in Creative Writing. Their senior thesis was a narrative poetry collection called wanderchild that explored themes of family, relationships, and personal identity through a dark and beautiful forest and a bright and terrifying castle. They currently work in the marketing department at the University of Notre Dame Press, and their favorite books to promote are the poetry collections.
Katie got married to their wonderful spouse in June of 2023, and honeymooned in Scotland and Denmark. They have two perfect and violent cats named Sweet Agnes and Tumbleweed, and get plenty of time to play with their parents’ Bernedoodle Murphy. They are a writer and a poet and love bringing ideas to life with the written word. They both run and play table-top role-playing games, and also run a creative writing group where friends get together to discuss each other’s work and give feedback. Collaborative storytelling is one of their favorite ways to craft a narrative.
Aside from writing, their favorite hobbies include all sorts of crafting and creating: drawing, crocheting, watercolor painting. This year they’ve even picked up embroidery! Making things help remind them that the world is truly a beautiful place and they can add to that beauty.
ABOUT "NEITHER":
In the Land of This and That, there are only two kinds: blue bunnies and yellow birds. But one day a funny green egg hatches, and a little creature that's not quite a bird and not quite a bunny pops out. It's neither!
Neither tries hard to fit in, but its bird legs aren't good for jumping like the other bunnies, and its fluffy tail isn't good for flapping like the other birds. It sets out to find a new home and discovers a very different place, one with endless colors and shapes and creatures of all kinds. But when a blue bunny and a yellow bird with some hidden differences of their own arrive, it's up to Neither to decide if they are welcome in the Land of All.
This colorful, simple, and touching story promotes diversity and offers a valuable lesson to the youngest of audiences: it is our differences that unite us.
