History for Lunch: Conserving and Commemorating the Great Dismal Swamp

The Museum of the Albemarle will host our monthly History for Lunch on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 12 p.m. in the Gaither Auditorium. Public historian Perri Meldon explores what became of the Great Dismal Swamp after 1865. What decisions made by Black, White, and Native farmers, landowners, hunters, and lumbermen shaped the vitality of this wetland? When so many other southern swamps were drained, cultivated, and built upon in the 20th century, how did the Great Dismal Swamp retain its original ecosystem? Meldon invites attendees to reflect on this place's cultural and environmental stories—past, present, and future.
