History for Lunch: The Hard Luck Career of the CSS Neuse

Join us as we host History for Lunch on Wednesday, Jul. 2 at 12 p.m. in the Gaither Auditorium.

Andrew Duppstadt, education and interpretation supervisor for the North Carolina Division of State Historic Sites, will examine the hard luck career of the CSS Neuse and its crew during the Civil War and beyond. In his journal entry of March 18, 1863, Confederate engineer Henry T. Guion wrote about the construction of the CSS Neuse, “Howard & Ellis are apparently driving hard upon the gunboat and…will finish here (Kinston) in ninety days. I give them ‘til Christmas – we shall see which is right.” As it turned out, neither was right, and it took several more months until the Neuse was completed and launched in April 1864.
