The Filling Station Visitor Center invites the community to take part in a special series of amateur radio events as part of Route 66 On the Air 2025.
Licensed ham radio operator Vonnie Meritt (KE5RKC) will be on site at the Filling Station at several times to connect with fellow operators along the Mother Road.
On Sunday, Sept. 7, at 7:00 a.m., Meritt will make live radio contact with her friend, pilot Bill Hartsell (W6Y), as part of the first-ever “Route 66 In the Air.” Residents are welcome to stop by early, bring their Route 66 questions, comments, and shout-outs, and enjoy free coffee and donuts while taking part in this one-of-a-kind connection. While supplies last.
Later that same day, Meritt will return from 3–5 p.m. for more Route 66 On the Air fun, once again inviting the community to participate and join in the conversation over the airwaves.
Meritt will also be back at the Filling Station on Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to continue making contacts during this international celebration of the Mother Road.
Now in its 26th year, Route 66 On the Air connects amateur radio operators across the globe to commemorate the history of America’s iconic highway. In 2024, more than 70,000 contacts were formally logged during the event.
