July 24th at Monarch will be the final Liverpool Lounge.
Many years ago (2000 I believe) Rene Romo started what would become a phenomenon in the local club/music scene in El Paso.
Hosted within Club Dedo, Rene, at the time the KDBC Sports Director, started what turned into a weekly event for years.
Focusing on “Britpop” the music was an all-encompassing theme that spanned several decades, from the 1960’s to the late 1990’s.
Alternative, pop, punk, indie, largely all from the UK, but also with some infusion of classic Motown, Rene and his co-worker and friend John Townsend, curated what became the Thursday club night destination in El Paso.
Jam packed every Thursday (we got into trouble) these sweaty, insane nights, where everyone was singing every word to every Smiths/Morrissey tune, it was something I personally will never forget.
The Liverpool Lounge was unlike anything that was happening anywhere in town.
Special Events: Morrissey Birthday every May 22nd, Rene Romo Xmas every Dec 23rd, Tribute Nights, Tribute Battles, Album release party’s… I can’t help but look back with great fondness and nostalgia for that time.
It really became its own scene.
Rene and The Liverpool Lounge were a huge part of getting Club Dedo off the ground.
We operated for 14 years, and those first few were the important ones when it comes to a fledgling alternative themed night club.
So, as we say goodbye, we have many memories and many lasting friendships that were made, and the incredible music that was shared, and perhaps the most enduring part is, it made a difference.
It made people happy, it was a unique creation for El Paso, and truly, a music lovers night.
So now I’ve only to say, the curtain is closing.
Good night sweet prince, you made a mark in many peoples lives.
You gave people the gift of music, memories, friendship, and happiness.
What greater impact could one have.
