Li Cham is the rebirth of three Tsostil women. After losing the lives of their babies and family members to patriarchal violence, part of each of them dies. With the arrival of the Zapatista movement, their dreams flourish and they defend what is most valuable to them: their land and a life of freedom and hope.
Length: 74 min.
About the Director: Li Cham (I Died), Dir. Ana Ts'uyeb
Ana Ts’uyeb is a documentary filmmaker, communicator and translator of Mayan-Tzotzil origin. She is a member of Cine Bolomchon, an exhibition space in Chenalhó. She produced and directed the shorts Organic Deconstruction and Walks through infancy in 2018, produced the shorts Guardians of the Earth in 2024 and was line producer for the feature Riox, Palabra florida and the short Conoce, crea y baila (2021). She also serves in NGOs for the empowerment of indigenous women and supporting migrants.
"They were denied the opportunity to graduate from school, their domestic and care work went unnoticed and some of their children did not survive: LI CHAM is about three Tzotzil women in Chiapas, Mexico who have all been damaged in some way. But the Zapatista movement gave them hope and allowed them to break down stereotypes and finally follow their own paths. Quietly and beautifully observed."
