In Mufasa: The Lion King vertelt Rafiki de legende van Mufasa aan de jonge leeuwenwelp Kiara, dochter van Simba en Nala. Hierbij wordt hij op eigenzinnige wijze ondersteund door Timon en Pumbaa. Het verhaal wordt verteld in flashbacks en introduceert Mufasa als een wees. Hij is verloren, eenzaam en alleen... totdat hij een sympathieke leeuw genaamd Taka ontmoet, de erfgenaam van een koninklijke bloedlijn. Deze toevallige ontmoeting zet een een groot avontuur in gang van twee buitenbeentjes die opzoek gaan naar hun lotsbestemming. Hun vriendschap wordt op de proef gesteld wanneer ze moeten samenwerken om een dreigende en dodelijke vijand te verslaan.
